The Country Feed Store is excited to announce we have more chicks coming in this weekend! They are hatching Wednesday and will be available for sale this Saturday, February 23.

Scheduled for this Saturday are Silver Laced Wyandottes, Sicilian Buttercups, and Ameraucanas.

baby chicksSilver Laced Wyandottes are the original Wyandotte variety, and a wonderful example of American breeding. They are beautiful and productive. Wyandottes are a favorite amongst backyard flock owners for their dependable egg laying, easy going nature and cold hardiness. Each feather is silvery white edged in beetle black, similar to Silver Sebrights. The Wyandotte roosters have the same laced feathers, but their hackles and capes are composed of glimmering silver, like a suit of armor.  Wyandottes have a heavy body and small rose comb which makes this breed perfect for cold climates because they are not prone to frostbite. The hens are hardy, energetic and faithful layers.

This exceedingly rare breed, Sicilian Buttercup, hails from Sicily as its name suggests. Its namesake, the buttercup-shaped comb, is totally unique in the poultry world. The American Standard of Perfection notes that 100% of the Buttercup stock in North America came from hatching eggs brought here in 1892. Sicilian Buttercup‘s eggs are small and can be colored anywhere from white to heavily tinted. They are good fliers and free-ranging Buttercups will often be seen perching in elevated areas such as fence tops, haylofts, trees, and arbors.

The Ameraucana breed was derived from blue egg laying chickens, but they do not have the breeding problems inherent to Araucanas. In addition, rather than ear tufts, they have muffs and a beard, and are very hardy and sweet. The Ameraucana Chicken is a fairly new breed introduced into the world of chickens and was bred for the unique color of the eggs.  They lay eggs in shades of blue, and even have blue (or “slate”) legs.
